Footprints
One night I dreamed a dream.
I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
one belonging to me
and one to my Lord.
When the last scene of my life shot before me
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
There was only one set of footprints.
I realized that this was at the lowest
and saddest times of my life.
This always bothered me
and I questioned the Lord
about my dilemma.
“Lord, you told me when I decided to follow You,
You would walk and talk with me all the way.
But I’m aware that during the most troublesome
times of my life there is only one set of footprints.
I just don’t understand why, when I needed You most,
You leave me.”
He whispered, “My precious child,
I love you and will never leave you
never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints
it was then that I carried you.”

聖書箇所：ヨナ２章
ヨナは魚の腹の中から、彼の神、主に祈って、言った。「私が苦しみの中から主にお願いすると、主は答えてくださいました。私がよみの腹の中から叫ぶと、あなたは私の声を聞いてくださいました。ヨナ２章１－２節
「この抒情的な中間章が風刺に役立っていることは確かである。ヨナを神の憐れみと救いを明らかに奇蹟的に受けた者に仕立て上げることによって、この挿話はあとで神の救いが他の人々に差し出されたとき、それを拒否したヨナの態度を弁解の余地のない、嫌悪すべきものにして見せるという効果をもっている。
・・・ヨナの口を通して魚の腹のなかから聞こえてくる美しい詩とも呼べる祈りの主題は、神の力による水死からの救いである。物語の代わりに抒情詩が大魚の腹のなかでのヨナの経験を描写するのにもちいられる。この詩の筆は巨匠のそれである。読者は、主人公であるヨナが危険にさらされているあいだ、ずっとヨナの内なる意識の底へと連れて行かれるからである。この章の根底にある大きな枠組は大切な原型である。これは、死＝復活の原型の一形式としてよく人に知られている。海底に下降して窒息するのは、明らかに死に似た経験を描き、深海から上昇するという原型的比喩は、下降上昇運動の再生の面を描いている。深い地底での三日間という枠組みも、イエスが認めている（マタイ１２章３９－４０節）ように、一つの原型である。」
